Throne Speech to Reveal True Stripes

Author: Victor Vrsnik 1999/11/24
WINNIPEG: The NDP's pre-election commitment to balanced budgets and tax relief will be put to the test during today's Throne Speech. The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) wants the new government out of the red.

"Anything short of a steadfast pledge to avoid red ink in 1999/2000 will confirm suspicions that the NDP is soft on deficits," said Victor Vrsnik, CTF provincial director. "The government can dispel the myth and enjoy the confidence of Manitoba taxpayers if first it can reign in spending, balance the books and provide over-due tax relief."

In response to a CTF letter to the new Premier in October '99, Mr. Doer acknowledged that "Manitobans clearly voted for strong health care and education systems, as well as for tax relief." The CTF is hopeful that the Throne Speech will echo Mr. Doer's remarks and commit to a balanced budget and competitive taxes.

Victor Vrsnik will be available for comment immediately following delivery of the Throne Speech on Thursday, November 25, 1999 at the CTF offices: 308-267 Edmonton Street, Winnipeg.
